Too often, children’s perceptions of law enforcement officers stem from negative first-hand experiences in their lives, or over-dramatized images on TV and movie screens. Deputy Bryan Pille works to demonstrate what it really means to serve as a Sheriff’s Deputy. As a Community Resource Deputy, Deputy Pille understands that the role of law enforcement is to not only work to solve crime, but to prevent crime.
“Think about what it takes to prevent a crime,” Deputy Pille challenges. “There are no set steps to follow to accomplish this. There are methods that you are trained to use, but ultimately, a deputy is going to have to recognize the unique needs of communities he serves, and successfully build the relationships necessary to prevent crime. You have to form partnerships and provide leadership capable of mobilizing citizens to work with law enforcement to solve their problems. You have to have a heart, be willing to listen, and be willing to lend a helping hand.”
Deputy Pille is a living example of the beliefs he advocates. As part of his duties, he takes time to talk and play with kids at the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, visit the Children’s Home with fellow deputies, and serve as a community mediator, providing insight that guides those involved in conflict to successful, and nonviolent, resolution.
Deputy Pille’s work has definitely affected his community, and in one particular instance, a family. “I had the opportunity to save someone’s life with CPR and it was an incredible feeling. To bring this young mother back to life and to have her kids look at me with such relief and gratitude was a moment that I will never forget. I feel so lucky to work in a profession that places me in a position to have such an important impact in people’s lives.” |
