Academic Classes |
|
Classes offered include basic adult
literacy and education, English as a Second Language and work readiness
skills. Each subject is designed to help some students attain
functional literacy and provide others the opportunity to test for their
General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Academic classes are taught by
the Hillsborough County School Board instructors and are available both
day and night. |

Computer Technology |
| Inmates are able to learn computer
skills through the basic literacy program and computer technology class,
which focuses on teaching skills used in the work place. |
|
Career Training |
| Careers and Accommodations Training
(CAT) is a classroom course designed around the hotel and tourism
industry. Upon completion of the classroom portion of the program,
eligible inmates transfer to work release to complete a four-week,
on-the-job training program. |
|
Carpentry |
| This course prepares inmates as
carpenters/carpenter helpers. Participants construct portable
classrooms and renovate existing facility program space. The
program is linked with the local Associated Builders and Contractors
Association for further training and employment referrals. |

Culinary Arts
|
| The Culinary Arts program prepares
inmates for employment as chefs, cooks, salad makers, food servers and
other positions within food service areas. Participants prepare
all salads and desserts for the entire inmate population, as well as
staff meals. |
|
Law/General Reading Libraries
|
| General reading materials are
distributed throughout the facility for inmates to use. Books are
purchased and provided by donations from the area libraries and private
citizens. Inmates also have access to law library materials on an
individual basis. |

What is Jail House Fire Hot Sauce?
A special blend of spices made by
Hillsborough County Jail inmates supervised by our Horticulture
Department. There are currently two types of hot sauce for sale
and they are selling quickly.
What are the types of sauce you have
and what is the price of each?
Currently, we have our "Original",
"Smoke"
and our *NEW* flavor
"No Escape". Bottles are $7.00 each.
Look out for our next new flavor, "Misdemeanor" (no release
date).

We are located at 1201 Orient Road at the
Orient Road Jail and you can pick up your sauce here!
Do you ship the sauce out of state?
We sure do! However, you will need
to pay the shipping cost. Please provide your address and telephone when
placing an order. We will call you back with the shipping cost for
your state.

Sewing & Alterations |
| Inmates experience hands-on training
with the tools and materials used in sewing. The sewing program
repairs mattress covers and uniforms, as well as makes special occasion
items (i.e. Christmas, Valentine's Day). |

Horticulture & Nursery
|
| This course provides instruction to
inmates dealing with many aspects of plant propagation, and of growing
fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Four public plant sales are
held annually to support the program's operation. |
|
Substance Abuse Treatment |
| The six week program provides a
comprehensive assessment, drug education, group and individual
counseling, educational and vocational counseling activities, and case
management services including the development of a follow-up treatment
plan and linkage with the courts and community treatment providers.
Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held throughout the
jails, and inmates are provided with information on groups available in
the community. The Sheriff's Office also provides
Domestic Violence counseling initiated due to the large number of
offenders being held on domestic violence-related charges. This course
requires inmates to attend classes 3 times per week for 8 weeks.

Self-Betterment/Life Skills |
| Life skills classes include: Parenting,
Food and Nutrition, AIDS Awareness, Employability Skills, Pathways to
Change and Personal Money Management. |
|
Religious Services |
| Services that are offered include:
Catholic (English and Spanish), Inter-denominational (English and
Spanish), Jehovah Witness and Islamic. Bible study and individual
counseling are also available. Inmates have the opportunity to see
religious visitors from around the country; such as the New York's
Manhattan Grace and the Tampa Bay Tabernacle Choirs, and a Christmas
Musical Service by Grace Ministries sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of
St. Petersburg. |
