Hillsborough County Camp (County Jail East) was originally operated by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) as work farm for misdemeanants and later utilized to house reduced-custody sentenced inmates. The rated capacity was 158. It was demolished in 1990 and turned into a staff parking lot for the Orient Road Jail. Tampa City Jail, built approximately in 1962, was located in the Tampa Police Department and held persons arrested within the city limits. It's rated capacity was 284 beds. All persons arrested between 1971 and 1981 were booked into this facility. In 1969, the city and county agreed to establish a board to represent all agencies involved in law enforcement and corrections. In 1970, the Hillsborough County Consolidated Jail System was formed. Legislation in 1971 established the Hillsborough County Board of Corrections which was renamed the Board of Criminal Justice in 1973. In 1983, the Board of Criminal Justice became an advisory body and the jail was placed under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff. A Work Release Center was constructed in 1972 near the Clark Avenue Jail. The facility was first called the Hillsborough County Offender and Diagnostic Treatment Center and had 46 beds. Another Work Release Center was built in 1990 across from the Orient Road Jail and originally had 54 beds. The current capacity is 175 beds. The Orient Road Jail was originally designed to have 1,330 individual cells. When it opened, it was the largest direct supervision jail in the country. It was developed with an open booking design. The Falkenburg Road Jail opened in 1998 with 768 beds. An expansion of the facility in 2003 added 1,536 more beds to its present rated capacity of 2,304. It is continuing to grow. |
