DEPARTMENT OF DETENTION SERVICES

During Your Academy

A recent academy assisted at the RCMA in Wimauma.  RCMA stands for Redlands Christian Migrant Association.  They provide quality child care and early education for children of migrant farm workers and rural, low-income families throughout Florida.  Today, they serve more than 7,000 children in over 75 centers, including 2 charter schools in 20 Florida counties.   The academy participated in painting, re-mulching, trimming trees, rebuilding sandboxes, added a handicapped ramp and pressure washed.  The project was completed over two Saturdays. The complex is quite large and a lot of work was completed.

Helping Others Is What We Do

Everyday

Major White, Retired Jail Division III Commander, throughout her tenure, has held various fund-raising activities for the children of Hillsborough County.  Project Zapatos distributed 4000 new pairs of shoes and socks to migrant students of Hillsborough County to give them a jumpstart for the new school year.  Project ABC provided school supplies, clothing, and personal hygiene items that were distributed to students of three Title I Schools.  In addition, she presented checks of $1,325.00 to local elementary schools.  During the holidays, volunteers collected Christmas gifts, cash, and gift certificates for residents and clients of the Children’s Home Society and the Children in Crisis.

In A Crisis

The staff of the Department of Detention Services participates in many events around the Tampa Bay Area and provide assistance outside the Tampa Bay Area in times of crisis. The commitment to the community is one that actively demonstrates the dedication and teamwork of the department.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area in 2005, 15 members of our own Tactical Action Control Team (T.A.C.T.) went to their rescue.  They were deployed for a period of 12 days to assist in the security of a jail system in Gulfport, Mississippi that was in need of extra staff.  The result of an experience such as this one helped staff realize how good we have things.  It was also a learning experience for how to cope with difficult emergency situations.
